What IELTS Band Do You Need?
Your target depends on where and why you are going. Universities and visa offices set their own minimums, and many enforce a per-skill minimum, so one weak section can hold you back even if your overall band is fine.
- UK universities: 6.5 overall is standard for most master's programs, with no band below 6.0. Top universities start at 7.0.
- Australia student visa: 6.0 overall minimum, with no component below 5.5, for direct university entry. Competitive universities want 6.5 to 7.0.
- Canada universities: 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is the standard for most undergraduate and master's programs.
- Australia PR points: band 7.0 in all four skills earns extra points, and 8.0 in all four earns the maximum.

Both test the same four skills and the same speaking and listening sections. The difference is in reading and writing. Academic is for university study abroad and uses academic texts and tasks. General Training is for migration, work, and some visa routes, and uses everyday and workplace material. We help you pick the right version for your goal before you start.
There is no single "good" score, it depends on your target. Most universities in the UK, Canada, and Australia want 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Top universities and courses like nursing, law, and medicine often need 7.0 or higher. For migration, the band you need is set by the specific visa or PR pathway. We confirm your exact target so you train for the right number.
Most UK master's programs ask for 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, and top-ranked universities start at 7.0. Some specialised courses like MBA and law can ask for 7.5. Remember that for a UK student visa you usually need the IELTS for UKVI version, not the standard Academic test, which our counsellors help you book correctly.
The Australian student visa minimum is 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5 for direct university entry. Competitive universities often want 6.5 to 7.0. For PR, a higher band earns more points: 7.0 in all four skills and 8.0 in all four skills earn extra and maximum points respectively.
Each of the four skills is scored on a band from 0 to 9, and your overall band is the average of the four. Many universities and visas also set a per-skill minimum, so you can miss your goal if even one section falls short, even when your average looks fine. This is why we train all four skills to your target, not just your overall average.
There is no limit. You can retake IELTS as many times as you need, and you use your best result. Many students only fall short in one skill, usually writing or speaking. Our coaching targets those exact weak areas so your retake lands the band you need. You can also retake just one section through the One Skill Retake option in many cases.
